As a Registered Nurse, Belinda Subraman has worked in several difficult areas, but from 2001 to 2007 she was working as a hospice nurse. This second edition includes a ten-page afterword from the author, detailing the creation of the book.

It's 2:04 a.m. I should have been asleep long ago, but I am awake, having watched television until past one, then, climbing into bed, telling myself I would only read one poem, maybe two, from Belinda Subraman's newest poetry collection. Instead, I read the entire book. Once begun, I could not stop. Subraman's collection is a gorgeous meditation on how we live our lives and on how we attempt to cope as our loved ones die. Her deft phrasing and deep compassion for the human condition make this collection a balm for all of us searching for meaning in life and death. Highly recommended.Product details

Subraman's simple and direct language pairs with her concerns as a hospice nurse to build a collection that is deeply felt and very honest. This develops into a very profound mediation on living and dying and the cycles we have to participate in. Subraman's keen observational eye works well here, and her humor and patience bring a compassion to these poems that is felt in reading them.
My April 2nd Facebook Timeline Review last spring... "Sorry folks... says that I just bought last copy of First Edition. However, Belinda says, 'Second edition later this year, I think, or next.' Granted, descending the Inferno for ablution and coming out purified but singed is not a whee let's do that again amusement ride. This is a sit your ass down and take your lumps it'll make you stronger kind of ride I can only imagine. When you let her know (you will, won't you?) not to put 2nd ed. off too long let her know also that you appreciate her sacrifice. Her valiance."
I smile to myself stupidly so, contentedly, that it was I who took the last cookie as impetus (heh heh) for a fresh bittersweet chocolate chipped batch.
Belinda Subraman is an accomplished master poet. I've been reading her poetry for over 30 years. She's been my nurse well before she even became a "real" nurse. Her words ARE nurses. Belinda's voice is soothing & strong & knowledgeable. Her point of view heals, surprises, & repairs cultural disconnections. Paradoxical conundrums & sudden explosions of skull-shattered prelapsarian epiphany; Belinda Subraman is a gracious, honest writer, who, as the world dies, CARES about existence. Belinda CARES about the poem, the reader, the shared insight, the truth. THANK YOU, Belinda, for light & focus, & most of all, despite our apathetic vulgar times, HOPE. HOPE. Empathetic poetry bandages. & yes, kisses of love.
