Most people would have panicked, sitting bound and gagged on a boulder in the middle of the desert as I was, but for some reason, I didn't. A strange kind of reassurance washed over me from somewhere deep within. Whether it was peace that I'd go quickly, or comfort that I was being protected, I wasn't sure.

When Mel Petersen leaves for work on the morning of February 7, 1958, he has no idea what awaits him. A few miles from his house, Mel picks up a pair of hitchikers who appear to be college students, hoping to save them from having to walk in the cold. What Mel doesn't know is that the men are actually convicts on the run, desperate to get away by any means possible.

When one of his passengers holds a knife to Mel's throat, he has no choice but to submit to the demands of the criminals. Mel hopes he has what it takes to talk his captors down, but fears they will kill him before he has the chance.

Based on a true story, THE SHARP EDGE OF A KNIFE follows Mel and his captors on an unforgettable ride that will have you questioning the depth of your faith and sitting on the edge of your seat.

I'm friends with the author of this book, so I'd heard about The Sharp Edge of a Knife for quite some time and had a lot of interest in reading it. I'm not normally a fan of true-crime kind of stories, but the way Ms. Giles talked about the story intrigued me.

And wow, she did not let me down.

Written in the first person narrative from both Mel (Ms. Giles's grandfather) and Jeneal (her grandmother) the Sharp Edge of a Knife tells how Mel is kidnapped and taken on a day-long escapade by two criminals who are intent on leaving him for dead and stealing his car. Mel lives, however, and his captors are eventually arrested. I thought both the writing and storytelling was excellent.

I imagine it's difficult to write a tale about your family members, but I didn't feel that Ms. Giles skewed the story in favor of her grandparents--her story rings true, showing both the good and bad that's in all our natures when put in extreme circumstances.

This is definitely an LDS story, as part of the way Mel managed to avoid death that day was by sharing his religious views with his captors. Even so, this is a fast-paced story of true fear and the faith required to overcome.

The Sharp Edge of a Knife edition by D N Giles Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

One would think that a true story might be monotonous, but this one was well written and held my interest throughout. Each time I had to leave the book, I couldn't wait to get back to it. Melvin Peterson is a family man who leads a fairly routine life until a frightening event changes all that! I look forward to future books by Ms. Giles!
This book was very well written and kept me glued to the pages. I couldn't put it down. I highly recommend this for everyone. Very faith inspiring and exciting.
This was a quick read because I couldn't put the book down! I felt the adrenaline rush as Giles transported us back through time to the brutal kidnapping of her grandfather. Every word pulled me along for the ride of a lifetime and I felt like I was a passenger, rooting for Mel from the back seat.
An incredible true story--Giles has done an excellent job!
"The Sharp Edge of Knife" is a fantastic story that will have you holding your breath and turning the pages as fast as you're able, to see what's going to happen next. Can we just say the word, "kidnapped"? Based on a true event, Giles follows the historical aspects with great accuracy and the story held me spellbound. I definitely give it 5 stars! (I'd give it more, if that were possible.)

[Disclosure Please note that I received a copy of this book for review from the author, whom I know. However, had I felt the book was not that good, I would have passed on the opportunity to post a review.]
This suspenseful story is amazing. Make sure you have plenty of time to read because once you start you won't want to stop. Sharp Edge of a Knife is based on a true story. It makes me sad to know that something like this can really happen in our world. This story will make you think twice before giving a stranger a ride ever again. Giles has done a great job of telling this story, and it will keep you guessing right until the very end.
